Team building activities are increasingly gaining significance in many institutional setting today, notably in corporations. Teamwork has been here since time immemorial, but it gains more importance today as business settings often remind employees to work in teams. Teamwork is essential because it has been observed that teamwork yields plenty of results (i.e. profits) as well as improves the morale of each member of the team. That is why institutions often sponsor team-building activities.
Each team member improves as a part of the team. Team members benefit mentally because they have their ideas tested by their teammates and they acquire new ideas, thus widening their viewpoints. They benefit socially because they get used to constant interaction, and thus get plenty of opportunity to practice their communication and expression skills. They benefit emotionally because they learn how to handle their feelings in the presence of other people as well as gain more insight about them. Companies recognize the importance of team building activities. They feel that team building activities, aside from being an additional investment, actually help mold better human beings.
Team building activities often contain elements of problem-solving and decision-making. That is the case when the activities involve some sort of strategy games. Each team member will learn how to pool the mental resources that the team has and will use them to come up with the best possible outcome to a situation. (The problem-solving and decision-making elements figure more when the activities involve real-life work situations.) Improved problem-solving skills acquired in these team building activities will become useful at work. Such team building activities can also help team members learn how to settle disagreements once they arise at work.
Over time, the more team members are together, the more bonds they form with each other. They tend to share interests and empathize with each other. Team building activities are important to maintain that atmosphere. For teamwork to work, it must be practiced, and team building activities are ways to solidify teamwork. Such team building activities allow team members to put into action mutual interests. For example, cooking as a team can put into practice the culinary interests of a team. Outdoor exercises can show the outgoing side of the team members. Team building activities are mostly leisure activities, like games, so they also tend to relieve stress that is a common part of the working life.
Also, with team building activities, teammates can identify each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which will enable the team to set its priorities and to delegate tasks according to the abilities and temperaments of each team member. Everything that each member learns in team building activities will become applicable in, say, meetings or team projects. For instance, an activity reveals that some team members are reluctant to share their ideas. Therefore, during work time, the more extrovert team members will encourage the shy members, in lively fashion, to give their say. That can improve the productivity of the team in the long run, as the ideas of the laidback members become useful only if known.
Teamwork is a primary driving force in today’s organizational landscape, and as long as no one is an island, team building activities will continue to be relevant.
